Utilities constantly face challenges associated with climate change. While coal plants are being retired as natural gas and renewable sources are being brought online to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, climate change is creating more extreme weather conditions—all of which continue to impact grid efficiency, capacity, and reliability. Fortunately, experience and technical advances are making the substantial challenges less daunting. This issue’s Bulletin Board focuses on blackouts, droughts, and heat waves, and scratches the surface on possible solutions that can help utilities move forward in overcoming the aforementioned challenges.
